1. Introduction and self-presentation
Whether you can deliver a concise, confident professional narrative in the first ninety seconds.
- Tell us about yourself.
- Give us the two-minute version of who you are and why you're sitting in front of us.
- What have you done to prepare for a job as a firefighter with this specific department?
2. Motivation and why this department
Genuine, specific motivation for this agency versus a script that would fit any department.
- Why do you want to be a firefighter with this department specifically?
- Why do you want to work as a public servant?
- What is your plan for your first two years on the job?
- This department serves a diverse community. What does that mean to you, and how would it change how you do your job?
3. Background, preparation, and qualifications
Evidence over intentions: certs, ride-alongs, volunteer time, and a story that matches your application.
- Communication is everything in this job. What are you doing right now to improve yours?
- How do you like to be coached, and what do you do when nobody is coaching you?
- What does community risk reduction mean to you?
4. Situational and judgment scenarios
Reasoning under an unfamiliar scenario: life safety first, then policy and chain of command, then act.
- A coworker asks you to clock in for them since they will be there in five minutes. What do you do?
- You notice your partner did not complete their SCBA check before a shift. What would you do, if anything?
- Your captain tells you to throw a ladder; while you do, a chief on scene tells you to pull the crosslay instead. What do you do?
- You arrive at a home where the family does not speak English and seems scared of you, but the patient needs help. What do you do?
5. Behavioral: teamwork, conflict, and character
Ownership and maturity in a shift family. 'Tell us about a time...' answers run on ARTS; blame fails.
- Tell us about a time you worked closely with someone whose background was very different from yours. What was the outcome?
- Tell us about a time someone gave you tough feedback.
- Give us an example of a time clear communication on your part prevented a problem or defused a situation.
- Tell us about a time you had to change tactics or pivot on a plan. What was the situation and the outcome?
6. Ethics and integrity
Whether you will do the hard right thing when no one is watching. Hedging here is disqualifying.
- Tell us about a time your integrity was tested. What happened, and what was the outcome?
- A family member asks you to use your position for a favor. How do you handle it, and how do you prevent it happening again?
- A crew member makes a joke that targets a specific group of people and nobody says anything. What do you do?
- What does accountability look like when the mistake is small and nobody would ever find out?
7. Community, service, and the close
A public-service mindset and a strong close. The fire service is customer service that happens to put out fires.
- You have thirty seconds to build trust with someone having the worst day of their life. How do you do it?
- How do you explain something medical to a scared family member who has no medical background?
- What does customer service mean in the fire service, and why should we hire you over the next candidate?
A list of questions is not preparation
A structure for answering them is. Panels are pattern-recognition machines, and raters are writing while you talk. Every answer you practice should run the ARTS method: Answer the question, Relate a personal story, Tie it to the fire service, Summarize. Read the oral board prep guide, or see worked answers to individual questions on the interview blog.
